On the road by 5:30 to get to Vegas before noon and the heat. Right chilly morning in the 50's at 7300' but beautiful for riding. The heat didn't really turn on until we dropped down into Kingman, AZ where you pick up US 93 to Vegas. There are signs in Kingman before you turn on to 93 that state no trucks, trailers, etc will be allowed across Hoover Dam. I ponder this for several minutes. I wish I'd taken a picture of the sign because it wasn't all that obvious to me if I would be allowed across. I couldn't believe that pickup trucks wouldn't be allowed across but SUV's, campers and minivans would. So I forged ahead planning my arguments.
The temperature climbed quickly to the mid 90's and when we stopped along 93 to soak bandanas in water to tie around our necks an Arizona State Cop pulled in seconds later to see if we were all right. My concern for crossing Hoover Dam was quickly going away as I saw all the crap coming towards me. The Department of Homeland Security has a check point about 5 miles before the dam where they inspect vehicles. I had to go into a special lane because I had a trailer, a BIG trailer which I had to open along with suitcases. I noted with interest all the SUV's and minivans going through the non-trailer lane with a much more cursory look. I could fit my whole rig in their back seat. Maybe if they had one of those roof mounted cargo carriers they would be inspected more closely.
It looks like they are constructing a major change to US 93 at the dam where a truly impressive bridge is being built to take the traffic off the dam and over the gorge. It will be one hell of a sight to go over. I mean the span is going to be really really impressive ... like the dam. This could be the bridge of bridges in the US.
Enough on bridges. We got into Vegas by 1100 and it was 106.
